7 Good Reasons You’re Still Unemployed 1. You aren’t networking enough. Almost all jobs these days are found through networking. If you’re applying through job boards, searching the internet, counting on recruiters or responding to want ads…you’re not doing enough. And, as I’ve said elsewhere, your resume is almost useless. 2. You interview poorly. We have interviewed a few people for a job we have open (office assistant). While this is, admittedly, a lower-level position, I’m surprised and shocked at how poorly people interview. Chewing gum, not dressing for the interview, arguing, and saying what you will and won’t do are all interview killers. 3. You’re pierced. Take out those facial piercings! Younger generation workers — this really turns off old farts like me. I won’t hire someone with a facial piercing or visible tattoo. It is unprofessional. 4. You’re asking too much money. Look, there is a “great reset” going on. Salaries are lower these days. We interviewed one person for a $30K job who had been making $70K. Frankly, we’re not going to hire someone with that huge of a salary gap. It isn’t the problem of employers you have lived beyond your means. Everyone is tight these days. Don’t go asking for a large salary and tons of perks. You might well have to bite the bullet and take much less to get off of the unemployment rolls. 5. You’re very overqualified. Realistically, I’m not going to hire someone with 10+ years of experience with a great deal of responsibility in their last job for an entry-level job. Entry-level jobs will be filled by entry-level people. All you do when you apply for these things is annoy the employer. I know you might be desperate. But it is better to consult or start your own business, than to apply for entry-level jobs. When I see someone with extensive experience applying for an intern job, I’m not even going to interview them. I know that they’ll be gone in a heartbeat if something in their field comes along, and that they won’t stay and grow with my company. I also know they’re going to second guess me, not be coachable and generally be a pain in the neck. Don’t bother to apply for these jobs. 6. You’re “shotgun” applying. I made the mistake of running an ad on one of the major job boards one time. BIG mistake. Everyone and their sibling applied, even with 0% of the qualifications. The rule of thumb is — if you don’t have at least 60% of the qualifications called for, don’t apply. You’re wasting your time. 7. Your attitude stinks. You might be coming across as having an arrogant or generally bad attitude. If someone is not upbeat and positive, I will rapidly end the interview.

For example, job titles are keywords – use your targeted job title in your resume's headline. Incorporate nouns and noun phrases describing the skills the employer is seeking. Five things you should consider leaving off of your resume


1. Objective statement: Objective statements, which usually start with, "I'm looking for a job that..." have long been considered passe. Employers aren't reviewing your resume to find out what you want in a job; they want the resume to tell them why they should want you. 2. References available upon request: Including a list of references or the statement, "References available upon request," isn't necessary, because it's expected that you have references, should an employer request them. 3. Outdated or irrelevant information: Resumes are about quality, not quantity. Hiring managers don't have time to read through three pages' worth of positions held, dating back to when you were a dog sitter in high school. Consider removing any experience that is more than a decade old, especially if it's not applicable to the position for which you're applying. 4. Personal attributes: Unless you're applying for a modeling job or another position where looks are a factor, leave your picture off your resume. Most employers shouldn't -- and legally can't -- care about your appearance; they just want to know why you'd be good for the job. 5. False claims: This should go without saying, but inaccuracies or over-embellished education or experience have no place on a resume. Besides running the risk of getting caught (were an employer to do a background check, talk to references or conduct a social-media search), why would you want a job if you're not adequately prepared for it?

New Year's Career Resolutions: Worth Making -- And Keeping


Maybe your big goal is to be happier at work. What small steps can you take to help that become a reality? • Are you always feeling stressed and busy? Consider coming in early (before the boss and your colleagues) to get some work done before the day gets started. Your small-step goal can be to come in five or ten minutes early every day. That's almost an hour of extra time to get things done in a week! • Make an effort to find a new friend at work. Studies show that people enjoy their jobs more when they have some allies at work. If you don't have any friends, identify one or two likely candidates and invite them to lunch or coffee. • Adjust your own attitude. Convince yourself that being happier at work will be useful for you and stop dwelling on anything that's stressing you out. Your small step goal can be to make a point to smile more every day. What if what you really want is a new job? Instead of a potentially overwhelming resolution such as, "Get a new job," consider a series of smaller resolutions: • Spend 10 minutes a day building a new resume. Phone interviews are commonly used by hiring managers to contact job candidates who aren't local. But, it's not always about location. Employers frequently use the phone interview to conduct a pre-screening for the job, answer resume questions, and establish your basic qualifications and company fit. Whether you're asked to interview on the spot or in less than 24 hours, don't panic! Before you stumble over your words or become flustered, there are a few tips that will prepare you for a last-minute phone interview: 1. Identify the best and the worst of your resume. The first thing you should do to prepare for a last-minute interview is collect your thoughts. This employer is obviously interested in you and possibly on a strict deadline, which is great news for you. However, you need to determine what job experiences and skills are most relevant to discuss with this employer. So, take a look at your resume. If you're afforded enough time, jot down two or three experiences and skills you'd like to highlight during your interview. Also, highlight weaknesses in your resume (that you can hopefully turn into a strength). This will help you answer questions with more confidence and detail. 2. Perform a quick search online of the company. Hopefully you're already familiar with the company that just gave you a call.
